Embracing the Rule of Six

by tjames May 1, 2021

Restrictions on lockdown have started to ease, and that means we can enjoy time in the garden or park outside with our friends and family.

But what to do with these sudden, extra social plans? And how to feed the extra mouths at home..? Fear not, as we’ve got you covered with our top six tips for spring.

1 Enjoy a BBQ in the garden

Everyone loves a BBQ! And as the weather starts to warm up, alfresco dining is the thing to do. Even if it’s cold – throw on a coat or grab a blanket, stoke the fire pit and embrace the outdoors.

When it comes to your menu, forget your burnt burgers! Instead, try our sumptuous swordfish with its elegant fine fillets – paired with punchy flavours such as chilli, garlic and ginger prior to grilling – and your guests will be in awe of your newfound culinary skills!

2 Partea-in-the-park

Afternoon tea in the park is definitely a fabulous way to meet up with your friends. Whether it’s accompanied by a flask full of tea or maybe a few g-and-ts, all you need to do is pack a picnic blanket and some scrumptious smoked salmon and cucumber sandwiches – made with our finest Scottish salmon of course – and away you go! Try our beautiful Scottish smoked salmon here.

3 Come dine outside with me

Whilst meeting inside is still off-limits, ensure your host isn’t stuck in the kitchen alone whilst everyone else catches up in the garden. To prevent a friend missing out, why not suggest each guest brings a dish so you can all dine outside together. Obviously, you’ll want your course to shine … so we suggest you volunteer to bring the starter and opt for our mouth-watering smoked mackerel pate and accompany it with some delicious crusty bread. No mess, no cooking, no missing out!

4 Breakfast at Tiffany’s (or Sarah’s, Amy’s or Kate’s!)

Another idea for meeting up with friends is arranging a gathering for breakfast – or a sophisticated brunch for after the school run. Strike whilst the daytime sun is hot and offer to cater for your group of six and wow them with our Salmon Benedict recipe here. If you’re a dab hand in the kitchen, it includes how to whip up your own Hollandaise sauce.

5 Walk off those lockdown pounds

Most of us have indulged in comfort food during lockdown – there hasn’t been much else to do! But there’s no need to beat yourself up about it as now you can arrange group meet-ups that include a little healthy exercise. So, gather your super six, put on your walking shoes and pack an easy and healthy lunch to enjoy when you stop for a rest break. Our Arbroath Smokies are delicious served in a wholemeal wrap with salad and pesto.
