It’s National Picnic Week this week! While the weather might not quite be holding up to what we’d expect at summertime, it’s still nice to eat al fresco – especially if you’re enjoying some delicious fish and seafood (like the contents of our new Easy Summer Seafood Box here! 1 It’s actually pronounced pique-nique
Did you know that the word originates from the French ‘pique-nique’. The French word piquer may have referred to a leisurely style of eating and ‘picking at one’s food’. It’s assumed that nique was just used as a rhyming word
2 Vive la picnic revolucion!
It was the French who arguably invented the picnics, with this al fresco form of eating becoming popular post-revolution, when royal parks were opened to the French public in 1789.
3 In the club
During the first half of the 19th century, there was a Picnic Society – how cool would it have been to have been a member of that!
4 We’re a greedy picnicking nation
Did you know that the average person picnics at least three times a year, that’s 94 million picnics per year!
5 And finally…
Did you know that the average family spends £26 per picnic totaling £2,479,720,000!
