Say Hola to our carabineros!

by tjames May 1, 2021

Carabineros you say..? Do you know much about these ravishing read prawns? If not, here are the top five things you need to know.

Uno: Why they’re called carabineros?

Sometimes known as red prawns, or scarlet prawns, they take their name from an adaptation of the Spanish word for ‘police’ on account of their rich colouring – similar to those worn by Spanish customs officers.

Dos: Where can you find them?

Well, thanks to Seafood by Sykes you don’t need to look very hard as we’ll now deliver them directly to your door. Originally though, these prawns are found in the Mediterranean or Eastern Atlantic; ours specifically come from the waters off Spain and Morocco.

Tres: Just how big are they..?

Big. Like really big. We offer them in two sizes, large and extra-large, with a single carabinero filling a dinner plate no problem!

Cuatro: Are they tricky to cook?

Nope. Go Spanish and devour them salted and grilled, or add them to paella for a luxurious twist on a classic dish. Regardless of how you serve them – they can be poached, sauteed or grilled – the strong, yet sweet flavour, will not disappoint.

Cinco: Why are they so special?

We think it’s because of their scarlet colour and meaty tails. All other prawn variations are grey and only turn pink when you cook them, whereas carabineros retain that lovely red hue all the way through to your plate. It’s really appealing and will easily have you thinking you’re back in the Med (and wouldn’t we all love that!).
